Jessica Simpson

We thought she’d be pregnant forever, but Jessica Simpson has finally delivered her baby. The singer/businesswoman gave birth to a baby girl today, May 1.  She and her fiance Eric Johnson announced the happy news on her website:

“Eric and I are elated to announce the birth of our baby girl, Maxwell Drew Johnson.  We are grateful for all the love, support and prayers we have received. This has been the greatest experience of our lives!!”

Little Maxwell’s androgynous name has familial origins.  Maxwell is Johnson’s middle name, while Drew is the maiden name of Simpson’s mother Tina Simpson.

And small wonder mama’s baby bump was so big:  Max was 9 lbs. 13 oz. and 21 3/4 in.  at birth.   Um, ouch!

It’s A Girl For Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard!

Peter Sarsgaard And Maggie Gyllenhaal

Congratulations to Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard!  Gyllenhaal gave birth to their second child, a daughter, on April 19th. Gloria Ray Sarsgaard joins big sister Ramona (5).

Gyllenhaal has been open about the demands of parenthood and how hard it is to balance working and being a mom.  In 2009, she told The Daily Mail:

“…motherhood is all-consuming.  Ten or 15 years ago there was this idea that women could do everything, and that they should be able to have these great careers and be mothers too. And I think that was a very helpful way of looking at things for a while.

“But now, with my generation, I think that there’s a sense of, ‘I can’t do everything, and nor should I have to. I need help and I need a husband and another set of hands, and even then I still might need help with babysitting.’ Working and mothering is extraordinarily difficult.”

Gyllenhaal recently appeared in a Got Milk? ad, touting the health benefits of the milk in her morning latte.  She and Sarsgaard have been a couple for a decade but married only since 2009.

Andrea Bocelli and Veronica Berti

Congratulations to three-time Grammy nominee Andrea Bocelli!  The Italian tenor and his fiancee (and manager) Veronica Berti welcomed a daughter in Tuscany on March 21st.

Little Virginia was given a name that reflects the area’s ancient history. “It’s of Etruscan origin,” her mother explained.  The Etruscan civilization flourished in the area now known as Tuscany in the pre-Roman era, reaching its peak between the 7th and 5th centuries BC.

Bocelli has two sons, Amos (17) and Matteo (14), with his wife Enrica Cenzatti, to whom he has been married since 1992.  They have been separated since 2002, the same year he met Berti.

It’s A Girl For Beth Littleford

Beth Littleford

Congratulations to former Daily Show correspondent Beth Littleford and her husband Rob Fox!  The couple welcomed their adopted daughter, Halcyon Juna Fox, on March 23.

Halcyon, who is already nicknamed Hallie, weighed 6 lbs. 9 oz.  She was adopted domestically.

Her name (which is very pretty, I think) was a collaborative effort between her parents and her older brother Jackson (6).    Halcyon is a family name – it is Littleford’s middle name and also her grandmother’s name.  Jackson, however, came up with the name Juna.

Fox is a producer, who also worked on the Daily Show.  Littleford recently appeared in Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Daughter Maxwell Lue may have a gender neutral name, but her parents are anything but ambiguous about their feelings for their little girl.   They told People:

“We thought we knew what love was until we met [our] sweet little girl.”

What do you think of the name Maxwell for a girl?  Drop a comment and tell us!
